Silence is rarely about you personally, which is exactly why it is so hard to read. The role may be on hold, the budget may have moved, an internal candidate may have appeared, or the process may simply be slow. But sometimes the silence does carry signal: a reference that landed oddly, an answer that raised a flag nobody wanted to discuss. The problem is that these look identical from the outside.
Look at the last real interaction. Did they name a timeline and miss it, or never name one? Did the tone shift between rounds? Did you send a follow-up that went unanswered, or have you not followed up at all? One polite follow-up after a missed timeline is expected behavior, not desperation. Two unanswered follow-ups is an answer in itself.
